James Suckling: 90 points
A powerful red with dried berry, cherry and vanilla aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, chewy and rich. A retro Super Tuscan. This has lots of character but remains fresh and bright. Aged three years in small oak with only 60% new wood. Drink of hold.

Aromas of blueberry and dried flowers follow through to a full body, fine tannins and a delicious finish. Better in 2014. (December 20th, 2013)

Falstaff – Tasting / Chianti Classico Riserva und Super-Tuscans: 93 punkte
Mit vorsicht zu geniessen (March 2014) Leuchtendes Rubin mit leichtem Gra- natrand. Feine, einladende Nase, zeigt No- ten nach Himbeere, Minze, Kirsche, im Hin- tergrund etwas Granatapfel. Zeigt im An- satz viel satte, offene Frucht, viel Himbee- re, öffnet sich dann mit feinmaschigem Tannin, sehr ausgewogen, baut sich lange auf, im Finale fester Druck.

Ätherischer Auftakt mit fein ziselierten Aromen von roten und schwarzen Waldbeeren. Harzige Noten, reduzierter Wiesenkräutersud, Grafit. Am Gaumen noch recht verschlossen mit erster reifer Süße. Straffe Säurestruktur und distinguiertes Tannin. Große Eleganz und Komplexität. Großer Wein, sicheres Reifepotenzial. ( veröffentlicht im Oktober 2013)

AL – The colour is ruby/garnet with some evolution; hint of vanilla and new oak on the nose, red and dark berries, liquorice and sweet spices. The palate is dense and chewy, still with a tannic presence, elegant fruit, balanced acidity, very good length and potential – still slightly on the youthful side, attracti- vely made in a traditional style. 92

MdM – Dark, purple red with violet hue. Elegant nose with complex aromas, reminiscent of dark berries, blackberries and elderberries, mild spics, vanilla and a hint of cinnamon as well as aromatic herbs. On the palate opulent, but elegant with good structure, freshness and good length. 94

Blueberry and dark chocolate, with minerals and mint. Full-bodied, with polished silky tannins and a subtle fruity finish. Balanced and delicious. A beautiful Sangiovese. Drink now. (December 27th, 2011)

Berry and cherry aromas, with hints of jam and cream. Full-bodied, with soft and velvety tannins. Loads of new oak makes it a little austere. But rich and yummy. Should soften with bottle age. Best after 2010. 575 cases made. –JS

Falstaff: 93 punkte
Funkelndes Rubin mit Violettschimmer. Verwobene Nase, zeigt Noten nach Lakritze und Cassis, dann auch Waldhimbeeren, etwas eingelegte Kirschen. Stoffig und kraftvoll am Gaumen, breitet sich schön aus, viel griffiges, zupackendes Tannin, baut sich vielschichtig auf, im Finale satter Druck.

Leuchtendes, sattes Rubinviolett. Kompakte Nase mit Noten nach Tabak, dann viel Holunderbeere, etwas Kirsche im Hintergrund. Stoffig und fest im Verlauf, entfaltet sich mit dichtmaschigem Tannin, baut sich vielschichtig auf, nach Zwetschken und Cassis, sattes Finale. Gorgeous aromas of blackberry and chocolate follow through to a full and rich body, with silky tannins and a long, succulent finish. Wonderful balance. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best after 2009. 790 cases made. -JS

Pure, direct plum aromas. Slick, ripe, rounded with full, rich tannins and a very sweet plum fruit. Drink up to 2012 – Date tested: 31 July 2008

The 2001 La Gioia is a joyous example of Sangiovese at its very best, powerful on the nose with sizeable and weighty notes of rich berry fruit, violets, and incense, dense and elegant on the palate with ripe and chocolatey berry fruit, superb focus, and a perfect fusion of the fruit and the oak.
